Happy Holidays to All of the Organ Donors and Recipients!

As the holidays approach, I am thinking about the person who received my kidney and how this is probably his first holiday without dialysis in awhile. Very cool.  I hope he enjoys the holidays and has great health.

Some good news this season, Michigan’s dismal ranking in organ donation is finally improving. Michigan’s organ donor numbers took a dramatic leap in November, with a 56 percent increase over November 2010. Hooray!  The article about this quotes Tim Davidson, of Highland, who last month celebrated the third anniversary of his liver transplant:

“It’s exciting to know that more people will have an opportunity to get a second chance at life like I did. Joining the donor registry is an ultimate, random act of kindness. You don’t know who may benefit from your gift, but you do it. I think of it as unconditional love for your fellow man.”

Couldn’t say it better myself! In this season of giving, think about signing up to donate your organs and encourage friends and family to do so. Let’s make the Michigan 2012 stats even better!

  1. Thanks for the post, Anne! We are VERY excited about the dramatic increase in the number of Michigan residents registering as donors. Having the Secretary of State clerks ask customers if they’d like to join the Donor Registry has made a tremendous difference. Most people want to donate – they just didn’t know how to sign up.

Thankfully, even while the Donor Registry rate was low Michigan residents have been exceptionally generous for years when asked about donating their loved ones’ organs and tissues at the time of death. In fact, last year Michigan was one of 8 organ recovery organizations to receive a HRSA Gold Medal award for having more organ donors (and more organs transplanted per donor) than could have been expected, statisically speaking.

Michigan residents can join the state’s Donor Registry at http://www.giftoflifemichigan.org, by calling 800-482-4881 or by visiting any Secretary of State branch office.
